Global Night Commute
We made it through the night cold and soggy. Our letters have been mailed to our senators and our president in hopes that they will open their eyes and finally see the plight of the Ugandan children. Even though the media ignored us, even though many we know might have thought us nuts to endure the cold and wet, we had to do what we could this night to join in solidarity (remembering it rains 3 to 4 times a week in Uganda) and to raise awareness.

Great turnout despite the weather. Awesome three hour impromptu drum circle and dancing. I for one will never look at a homeless person the same again and will be ever grateful for my soft bed and safe home. We take so much for granted here and can't even see it. Keep getting the word out, if our voice gets loud enough someone will have to do something to help.

You can click on any of the photos below to go to a higher resolution version of the same thing. If you want to use any of these for anything, all you have to do is ask.

My new ride

Okay, I know I have a ton of bikes, but I've been dying to have a good road bike so that I might commute 17 miles to work (a steel 3speed just wasn't gonna cut it in terms of speed or the amount of effort I'd have to put out). I got super lucky being the one who got to buy this gem. It's a 1977 Schwinn Le Tour. Very excellent condition.

I will be replacing some of the parts (as I had already intended when looking for a road bike) eventually. I want to get some smaller reach handlebars (like the kind off of a Specialized Dolce) and a really awesome saddle that retails for what I just spent on the bike (lucky for me I work at a shop and can get it for under cost). And probably some nice bar tape and a new rear derailleur (the Le tour one is okay, just well worn and the pulley wheels are showing some wear.) And I'll likely recable it just out of principle due it them not being brand new. Oh yeah and add a water bottle cage or two, some lights, and maybe a rack (I've got most of this stuff hanging around already).

I'm going to spend the rest of my afternoon on the deck listening to music and cleaning it up (a bit dirty from use). Yes, I spent more on it than I probably should have, but in it's condition, it was totally worth it. And it's like my car, exactly what I wanted at exactly the right time.

P.s. when I get around to it, I'll take a photo of the sweet Raleigh 3-speed I picked up during trash out. Needs new tires and some cleaning (and maybe a bit of work on the hub), but it's a gem with nearly all the original parts.

Let's go ride a bike

Dust off your cruiser and air up the tires. It's time to get back to good old fashioned bike riding. I'm really not kidding. Too many people are caught up in the fast paced world and I've decided to provide a bit of calm.

For the months of May through August on Monday nights at 6pm, I will be leading a social bike ride from the Shoreview location of Erik's Bike Shop. It's free (all you do is sign up for the free Erik's Bike Club). We'll go about 8-10 miles each ride ending with a stop at the local Caribou Coffee.

Riders are encouraged to bring antique cruisers to ride (I myself will sport one of a couple 3-speed cycles from my fleet). All ages and experience levels are welcome. Please wear a helmet and come ready for fun. More info here.
