Procrastinate, show your work, and then double check your answers |
I should have learned all that would pay off when I utilized it in high school. I've been dreading April 15th. Tax day. I guess it's the 17th this year due to the weekend, but all the same, dread. My initial calculations on my income taxes were that I would have to pay for the first time in my life. $350 or so. Oh dread. I had the money, but I certainly didn't want to hand it over the government to squander.
But the day is here and I had to do my taxes and show my work and file. Found some websites to e-file for free, which did help and did a bunch of the work for me. But even in my initial pencil calculations on brand new forms this morning, I got a wonderful surprise! I didn't owe! In fact, they owe me! How could this happen?!?!?
I don't even have the old documents to know where I went wrong the first time, but if H&R block and Turbo Tax tell me it's right after my input and their calculations and I'm backed by their guarantee that if their calculations are wrong they have my back with the IRS, then I'm so happy! I feel like I just gained $700. I still have the $350 I earmarked for taxes and I'm receiving an additional $185 Federal and $146 State returns! Yipeeee!
I might be able to open a savings account for the first time in years and years. Maybe I can even get that new lens for my camera I've been covetting (and it would save me money in the long run on wedding rental charges for said lens). Oh joy, I have financial security! |

Congrats! It always feels good to get some money back, even with the knowledge that said money could have been sitting in your own savings account this whole time earning interest for you instead of for the government.
As an aside, where do you rent your photo equipment from? I've rented a few things from West Photo, but would like to find a few other options out there.
